lapel pin design

A Lapel Pin Illustration before and after production. Actual size is 1.25" high.

When it comes to illustration in particular, you will find very few people in Greenville who can compete. I have over a decade of illustration experience. I create new illustrations daily for promotional items such as patches for fire departments or lapel pins for employee recognition awards. This keeps me on my toes so that I am efficient and knowledgable in Adobe Illustrator.

I keep my illustrations simple and practical at all times. The purpose of an illustration is to make things LESS complicated than a picture. Corporate identity is often simple. The Nike "swoosh" is something you can always remember because of it's simplicity. That simplicity also serves another function - it can be printed and produced on any substrate (material).

Illustration for Print

Illustration for offset printing and screen printing requires carefull planning and set up. Money can be saved by using less color, but the design needs even more special attention. Choking and trapping colors is a technique which is used to overlap colors. Overlapping these colors is vital to overcome registration errors in the printing process.

Halftones can be used as seen on the motorcycle below. Halftones are used in one color designs to create the illusion of another color, in this case - gray. This means the design only needs one run through the screens, saving precious time and resources for any T-shirt screen printer.

Four-Color Process (CMYK) Printing

This type of printing uses several dots called halftones. Four colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) are blended in order to encompass a wide color gamut. A halftone pattern can show a lighter or darker version of each color. Once printed, each halftone pattern is rotated 45 degrees to prevent a moiré pattern of all the colors on the substrate (paper, cotton etc.). Today, programs are used which perform these tasks automatically, but it is still important to understand the process and set up the file appropriately.
